The series of work Family Freak Show is a personal representation of family anecdotes and cultural stereotypes translated into photographs, drawings, and books. Ideas of beauty, ethnicity, and identity mix together in order to play a game that challenges the eye and the perception of truth depicted in family pictures. This spectacle of family deformities results primarily from my personal stories and fantasies combined with popular imagery. The reason to compare, imagine and present my family members as freaks comes from childhood experiences in which laughing and crying seem to be not very different from one another. The “freak” also addresses issues of perfection and beauty found in Western society depicted mainly by the fashion and mass media world.
This was my first solo exhibition, “Family Freak Show” at Clínica Regina, Centro Histórico, Mexico City.
